One unexpected encounter can change everything
“A Pleasant Surprise” is a warm, lyrical comedy based on the famous play “Visiting Mr. Green” by American playwright Jeff Baron. This play has been successfully staged in 25 countries around the world. The plot follows Ross, a young successful man who knocks down elderly Mr Green on the street and is sentenced by the court to look after him for several weeks. This situation becomes the point of intersection between two lonely lives that seemingly should never have come together. What will come of it?
The play ‘A Pleasant Surprise’ is a mixture of sharp dialogue, subtle humour and emotional experiences. Gradually, Ross and Mr Green reveal their ‘skeletons in the closet’ to each other, talking about their past and their desired future. The audience will be able to observe how, over the course of several meetings, the relationship between two dissimilar personalities evolves and strangers become more important to each other.
The story of a life lived
The old, stubborn and sarcastic Mr Green and the modern, determined and inwardly broken Ross are the only characters in this play. They are played by Oleksiy Vertynskyi and Artem Yemtsov, respectively. The depth and sincerity of their performances will keep the audience in suspense until the very end. The characters' forced collaboration turns into a spiritual journey, where each of them gradually takes off their masks and speaks the truth about themselves, their fears, resentments, loneliness and... their need for love. There is no pathos in this story – only real life, with all its imperfections, humour and paradoxes.
‘A Pleasant Surprise’ became a hit back in its premiere year of 2018 and still draws full houses. This play is a reminder that sometimes even the smallest coincidence can open the way to healing. And that simple human warmth can save lives.
