A touching story about fear and indifference
At the centre of the plot of the play ‘I See You Are Interested in Darkness’ is criminal psychologist Andriy Haister. He arrives in the neglected village of Buskiv Sad to help investigate the mysterious disappearance of a little girl. But instead of fruitful cooperation, he encounters strange apathy among the local residents. They are not concerned about the fate of the child, the threat posed by a maniac nicknamed the Beast, or the fact that it is impossible to leave the village, as if an invisible force is holding everyone trapped.
Step by step, Geister realises that the real danger lies not only outside, but also in people's souls, where indifference and fear breed true darkness. Will he be able to find the girl without losing himself in the process? Find out by watching the play ‘I See You Are Interested in Darkness’.
Long-awaited theatre premiere in Kyiv
The play ‘I See You Are Interested in Darkness’ is the result of collaboration between the brilliant ‘Wild Theatre’ and the outstanding Maria Zankovetska National Theatre. Many Ukrainians have been eagerly awaiting this production, as the original source material, Illarion Pavlyuk's novel of the same name, became a bestseller in Ukraine in 2023. The work received numerous positive reviews for its hidden meanings, references and intriguing mystical plot.
In addition to the brilliant scenography and acting and directing skills, the musical accompaniment plays an important role in the theatrical adaptation of the novel, intensifying the psychological tension and creating a special emotional space. Therefore, the play ‘I See You Are Interested in Darkness’ features Ukrainian folk songs, as well as compositions and lyrics by the bands:
- ‘Medovy Polyn’;
- ‘Viy’;
- ‘Kyiv Ethno Trio’;
- ‘Perkalaba’;
- ‘Vopli Vidoplyasova’;
- Oleg Skrypka.
This multi-layered musical layer becomes another voice of the play – the voice of the subconscious, fear, and collective memory.
Die-hard fans of the novel should note that two versions of the performance are planned, which will differ in terms of the cast, performance dates and certain plot accents. This is a unique opportunity to see the story from different angles and delve even deeper into the darkness, which may be much closer than it seems.
