A place for opera and ballet

The Kyiv Municipal Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre was founded in 1982 under the name State Children's Music Theatre. It was the first and remains the only theatre of its kind in Ukraine. From the very beginning, the institution's activities were aimed at introducing young audiences to the world of great music, opera and ballet.

In 1998, the theatre acquired its own home – the building of the former workers' club ‘Kharchevnik’ at 2 Mezhigorskaya Street, near Kontraktova Square in Podil. This 1930s constructivist-style building in a historic location is recognised as a cultural monument and has become the theatre's architectural landmark.

Since 2019, the Kyiv Municipal Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre has been officially positioned as the Kyiv Opera, adhering to a principled cultural position – performing works from the world opera repertoire in Ukrainian.

Today, the Kyiv Opera is a multifunctional theatrical organisation with two stages: the main hall with 420 seats and a special shelter stage, a safe and comfortable location for the youngest viewers. The theatre has opera and ballet troupes, a symphony orchestra and a choir.

Performances for every taste

Over the years of creative activity, more than 200 performances have been staged here, 40 of which were world or Ukrainian premieres. Currently, the repertoire of the Kyiv Opera includes more than 60 productions of Ukrainian and world classics:

  • opera;
  • ballet;
  • musicals;
  • symphonic and vocal-symphonic programmes;
  • musical fairy tales for children.

In addition to participating in performances, the theatre's choir and symphony orchestra actively perform concert programmes covering various musical eras and styles. It is this versatility that makes the Kyiv Opera an important cultural centre of the capital and the country.
